Position Summary

The School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking an individual to serve as a Research Associate/Programmer and Policy Analyst. This individual will be involved in projects that assess the impact of social welfare policies at the state and local level. This individual will participate in the development, maintenance, and analysis of longitudinal databases that track the outcomes for children and families involved with the social welfare and other human service systems. The individual also will be responsible for the development and support of web sites that publish information about the welfare programs based upon the longitudinal files. The individual hired for this position will need to have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work independently. This individual will need to work with various different datasets from different systems to create longitudinal files.

Educational Requirements

Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in social work, computer science, public policy, statistics, data analytics, or a social science discipline and at least one year of experience in programming.

Qualifications and Experience

The individual hired for this position will need to have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work independently. This individual will need to work with various different datasets from different systems to create longitudinal files. Training and experience in working with administrative and/or operational data is highly desirable. The successful candidate must have knowledge of computer programming concepts such as arrays, functions, and trees. This person should have experience with SAS and the Unix operating system. This individual will need to know how to communicate (written and spoken) technical material to a variety of audiences. The individual will need to demonstrate experience of extracting information from database tables (e.g., DB2) or files and building and maintaining longitudinal datasets. Experience with SAS/IntrNet is a plus.
