Position Summary

The School of Nursing is seeking a senior leader who has substantial experience in academic leadership in nursing and is eligible for tenure as a full professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Executive Dean/Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is the administrative officer who:
• Facilitates the planning, administration, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the academic programs of the School.
• Ensures that the academic standards and policies of the University, Graduate School, School of Nursing (SON), and accrediting and approval agencies are met.
• Is responsible for programs, and policies that support student academic progression, and clinical site contract compliance.
• Represents the Dean at designated School, University, professional, and community group meetings.
• Assists the Dean to fulfill SON operational responsibilities/support for special educational related projects as needed and is considered a resident resource and expert in state of the science pedagogy.

The Executive Dean/Associate Dean for Academic Affairs reports directly to the Dean. S/he collaborates with the Associate Dean for Strategic and Global Initiatives, the Associate Dean for Research, the Associate Dean for Administrative Services, Office of Inclusive Excellence and other SON leaders to enhance and foster synergy among the School’s academic, research, and service/practice programs.

The Executive Dean/Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is the School’s liaison to the Dean of the Graduate School. S/he supervises and facilitates the work of SON directors of undergraduate, masters, post masters, and doctoral/postdoctoral programs, the division chairs, the Director of the Education Innovation Simulation Learning Environment (EISLE), the Clinical Site Placement Coordinators, the AHEC Liaison and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. S/he also leads the selection of undergraduate academic counselors and program leaders for the undergraduate and graduate clinical programs and provides feedback for performance evaluations for individuals in these roles.

The Executive Dean/Associate Dean develops and maintains collaborative relationships within the School by attending meetings of the Dean’s Cabinet, the assembled faculty, and standing and ad hoc committees and task forces. The Executive Dean/Associate Dean chairs the Academic Affairs Council and meets regularly with the student representatives from all SoN programs, and serves as a member of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council.

Educational Requirements

Requirements include a research doctorate in nursing and/or related field.

Qualifications and Experience

The applicant should be a registered nurse, be eligible for RN licensure in North Carolina, and have a research doctorate in nursing and/or related field. The successful candidate for the Executive Dean/Associate Dean for Academic Affairs position must have academic leadership experience and possess expertise in the following areas: innovative instructional methods, curriculum design and evaluation, program evaluation and accreditation, management, organizational operations, and research. Of particular importance is that the candidate have strong, culturally competent interpersonal and communication skills. Evidence of fostering diversity and inclusivity amongst learners, educators, and the nursing workforce is essential.
