Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine’s Department of Genetics is seeking a Research Associate, who will join the research program directed by Dr. Samir Kelada. As Research Associate, the selected candidate will be responsible for supervising and contributing to NIH-funded research on gene-environment interactions in asthma and other airway diseases involving inflammation and mucus hyper-secretion. The research in the Kelada Lab is interdisciplinary and involves the use of model systems and techniques from genetics, respiratory toxicology, and immunology, as well as computational/statistical modeling involving genetic and genomic data).

The successful candidate will help drive the research agenda forward by conducting experiments, carrying out data analysis, and facilitating project operations. The candidate will be required to carry out experiments independently as well as in team-work setting. Assistance with writing manuscripts and grant proposals will also be part of the job duties. Additionally, he/she will supervise employees including postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, research specialists and technicians. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to present their work in national and international meetings.

Educational Requirements

PhD and postdoctoral training in a scientific field with an emphasis on asthma/allergy, airway epithelia and/or mucin biology.

Qualifications and Experience

The selected candidate must have at least 3 years of work experience in a relevant research program and have relevant publications. Also, he or she must have experience with adhering to federal and NIH regulations, grant management is also desirable.
