PRIMARY PURPOSE OF ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: The North Carolina Botanical Garden furthers the University’s mission of teaching, research, and public service through its mission: To inspire understanding, appreciation, and conservation of plants and to advance a sustainable relationship between people and nature. The North Carolina Botanical Garden has been a leader in native plant conservation and education in the southeastern United States for more than 50 years.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; however, relevant undergraduate degree (Horticulture, Botany, Ecology, Environmental Education, Landscape Architecture), or related field and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Ph.D. degree preferred.
|Qualifications and Experience||
At least five years professional experience in public horticulture, landscape architecture or a related field and two years experience with project and personnel management.
Demonstrated knowledge of native plant horticulture, garden design, landscape maintenance, nursery production, integrated pest management and plant care with emphasis on the flora of the Southeastern U.S.
Demonstrated organizational, management, and leadership skills, experience supervising staff and volunteers, energy and creativity, ability to write for and present information to varying audiences, and commitment to and passion for the mission of the North Carolina Botanical Garden.
A hands-on leader, actively working in daily horticultural tasks with a strong work ethic and a willingness to work flexible hours including nights and weekends and in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to collaborate with others, attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, funding proposals and procedural guides.
Experience with MS Office and other database programs associated with collections management (plant records).
Demonstrated ability to teach, lecture to the public, and lead workshops with high effectiveness.
Pesticide Applicators License or Certificate (or ability to obtain), valid North Carolina Driver License.
Ability to safely move and lift up to 50 pounds.
