Position Summary Information

Department Description

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks applications for the position of Applications Specialist for the support of the ConnectCarolina system for Information Technology Services (ITS). The Campus Solutions implementation of the ConnectCarolina system replaced the University’s administrative software systems serving students including those that support admissions, records and registration, financial aid and student accounts activities. The Campus Solutions (CS) ITS team is responsible for the ongoing support of the PeopleSoft modules and related applications including applying bundles and patches, retrofitting customizations, and implementing changes and enhancements requested to support new or changed business processes.

Position Description

The Applications Specialist position reports to the Manager, CS Admissions and Financial Aid and is responsible for identifying high level business and information system requirements and functional expertise and support for the Admissions and Financial Aid modules in Campus Solutions. This position evaluates functionality and leads the effort to develop strategies and negotiate resolutions of conflicting requirements across departments. This position also recommends business process redesign where applicable. Positions may have knowledge of more than one professional discipline and this may require knowledge of external trends and best practices. This includes support for staff, applicants, students, and faculty that use the PeopleSoft ERP software as well as third party applications. Responsibilities include:

  • Translating business requirements into development solutions, implementing and testing code

  • Consulting with business units to obtain additional information during solution design and development, evaluating alternatives to application modifications

  • Documenting technical business specifications, business processes, and recommended application solutions

  • Supporting project management with task plans and updates for project activities

  • Monitoring product upgrades and review/code for retrofit needs

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Math, or Engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in business application consulting or development; or
- Bachelor’s degree with some computer coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in business applications consulting or development; or
- Associate’s degree in computer programming and three years of experience in application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Required skills and knowledge include: ability to work independently on tasks, develop his/her own work schedule and monitor progress against defined parameters, strong analytical and problem solving skills, strong communication and organizational skills. Development knowledge and experience in PeopleSoft is required, as is experience supporting and testing applications.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have prior University or Higher Education experience. Minimum of 8 years of functional and/or technical support experience in PeopleSoft highly desired. Project management skills and development life-cycle experience highly desired. Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Ability to work under stress related to production and project timelines; work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.
