Department Description

The School of Nursing at UNC-Chapel Hill is nationally recognized as one of the premiere nursing schools in the country, with a tri-fold mission of excellence in nursing education, research and practice. The School offers a full complement of nursing education programs, as well as the first PhD program in North Carolina. The School of Nursing (SON) has approximately 133 Faculty, 148 Adjunct Faculty, 730 students, 58 permanent staff, and a current budget in excess of $15 million. The UNCSON Office of Communications is responsible for the development and maintenance of consistent brand standards for the School of Nursing, for promoting its academic offerings and scholarly activities to prospective students and faculty, and for publicizing its good work on behalf of patients and the profession of nursing.

Position Description

The Assistant Director of Communications will work with and under the supervision of the Director of Communications to establish and maintain a coordinated branding, social media, marketing and public relations program based on the mission, educational philosophy, and goals of the UNC School of Nursing. The position will serve as the deputy communications officer for the School. This position will formulate and produce stories, video spots, podcasts, press releases and marketing pieces to promote, publicize and build awareness of the activities, mission, rankings, priorities and programs of the SON. This position will have budget responsibilities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Working knowledge of presentation, graphics and web design software. Professional experience should reflect progressively more responsible authority for the management of tasks, projects and special assignments.
Must provide evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

3-5 years’ work experience related to communications in public relations / marketing. Higher education experience preferred. Knowledge of UNC a plus. Photography and low-level videography a plus.
