Position Summary

The Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at The University of North Carolina at Chapel is recruiting for a Research Associate/Practice Support Coach position. The Sheps Center is a world-renowned, university-based research center, in which over 100 faculty, fellows, and research staff conduct a broad array of research activities in a collegial, interdisciplinary environment.

The UNC Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a three year grant funded research and intervention project housed within the Sheps Center and is focused on reducing barriers to and engaging primary care providers in the provision of medication assisted treatment for opioid use disorders. Major project foci include recruitment of rural primary care providers to MAT and evaluation of both barriers and enabling factors for successful MAT services/engagement.

The Research Associate/Practice Support Coach will work primarily in 22 rural North Carolina counties directly with practice managers and nursing staff working in the offices of primary care providers (PCP) enrolled in the study. The Practice Support Coach will help the PCP clinical and office teams develop and implement practice standards and policies that will enhance successful implementation of a MAT service by the participating PCP. The Practice Support Coach will also work with office and clinical staff to identify community treatment and other support resources, including MCO treatment providers and harm reduction supports that will assure a system of integrated care available for patients in the MAT service. The Practice Support Coach will help with development of clinic support materials for MAT practices, assist with recruitment of participant providers, provide technical assistance to office staff on evidence based MAT services, participate in ECHO clinics, do practice based training with office and nursing staff on substance use and opiate use disorders, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and on issues of addiction stigma, as well assist as needed with data collection efforts. The Practice Support Coach will have a central role to link office staff with community resources for patients and technical assistance with the office aspects of the practice based interventions.

Extensive travel and ability to work with minimal supervision is integral to the position. As a community representative of the University and the project, the necessity of responsible professional behavior is paramount. Satellite office space in the western and far eastern counties in collaborating agencies may be possible. Regular meetings in Chapel Hill will be required, even for staff primarily out stationed in rural counties.

Educational Requirements

MSW, MPH or graduate degree in related health field and both clinical skills and subject matter expertise OR a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 5 or more years directly related experience.

Qualifications and Experience

Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Experience with MS Office to include Word and Powerpoint required.

Preference for applicants who have experience with the subject matter and populations addressed. Preference for applicants with related clinical license (LCSW, LCAS, LPC, NP, RN, LPN, etc.). Applicants with associated clinical experience and license preferred. Excellent collaborative and networking skills, as well as experience in primary care preferred. Experience with technical assistance and training preferred. Experience working with implementation of evidence based practices in clinical settings or on clinic research projects would be beneficial.
