Position Summary

This twelve-month (renewable) postdoctoral fellowship is designed to provide those who complete it successfully with a sound foundation to begin careers in academic pharmacy and to become productive scholars in pharmacy education research. Fellows will participate in research/scholarship, teaching, and service through work in the Center for Pharmacy Education and Research (CIPhER). In the course of a year, the fellow is expected to collaborate on at least one major CIPhER research or scholarly project, publish/co-publish scholarly work in a relevant peer-reviewed journal, and present findings at a national pharmacy education meeting(s). The CIPhER Fellow will assist Center staff in designing, developing, implementing and assessing professional development programs, services and events. The fellow will also be expected to serve as a teaching assistant and/or facilitator in at least one course in the school’s PharmD program. Additionally, the fellow will have opportunities to participate in relevant professional development programs and events.

CIPhER Fellows will commit to advancing the following goals:
• Furthering the educational and research missions of the School and CIPhER
• Assisting the School in realizing its Strategic Plan benchmarks
• Designing, developing, implementing and assessing CIPhER programs and events
• Developing his/her educational research skills
• Developing his/her academic writing and presentation skills
• Developing his/her teaching, facilitation, and assessment skills
• Documenting and sharing educational innovations and research findings through academic publications and presentations

Approximate Distribution of Effort:

• 70% Research and Scholarship
• 20% Teaching/Facilitation
• 10% Academic Administration & Service

The dual mission of the Center for Innovative Pharmacy Education and Research (CIPhER) is to improve the quality and effectiveness of pharmacy education research and scholarship and of teaching and student learning within the Eshelman School of Pharmacy – as well as nationally and internationally. CIPhER provides administrative, methodological and collegial support and professional education for UNC Eshelman faculty, preceptors, postgraduate fellows, residents and teaching assistants engaged in pharmacy education and related scholarship and research. It also supports a team of postgraduate research fellows, PhD students and PharmD students who engage and assist in Center-related research projects. CIPhER offers onsite and online training workshops and institutes, and coordinates relevant, mutually beneficial efforts with entities such as the UNC Center for Faculty Excellence, other UNC health science schools, the UNC School of Education, ACPE, ACCP, and the PharmAlliance.

Educational Requirements

To be considered for the CIPhER Fellowship program, the candidate must have earned a terminal degree (PharmD, PhD or EdD) from an accredited university and, if he/she is a pharmacist, be licensed or eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in North Carolina.

Candidates who have completed the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and at least one year of pharmacy residency will be strongly preferred.
