Position Summary

A postdoctoral position is now available for developing an enzyme-based method to synthesize sulfated carbohydrates in the lab of Dr. Jian Liu at the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The project has been funded by the NIH for nearly a decade. One goal of the project is to develop a cost-effective method to prepare synthetic heparin, a commonly used drug to treat blood clotting disorders (reference: Science Translational Medicine, 9, eaan5954 (2017)). Another goal of the project is to investigate the structure and function relationship to discover new carbohydrate-based medicines. Successful candidate will be responsible for developing a method to synthesize sulfated carbohydrates using enzymes, conducting enzymatic engineering to improve the enzyme-based synthesis and investigating the biological activities of sulfated carbohydrates.

Educational Requirements

PhD in chemistry, chemical biology, medicinal chemistry or biochemistry

Qualifications and Experience

Documented research productivity and excellent communication skills are necessary. Experience in molecular cloning and protein expression is a plus. Priority will be given to those who has research experience in carbohydrate synthesis, protein engineering and glycobiology.
