Position Summary

The Division of Hematology/Oncology at the UNC School of Medicine is recruiting for an Advanced Practice Provider who will be hired at the faculty rank of Research Instructor.

The Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant will serve as an Advanced Practice Provider for the UNC Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program. The principal responsibility is to provide primary medical care and coordination of comprehensive medical and psychosocial services to adults with sickle cell disease.

Specific duties related to this activity include:

• Conducting detailed patient evaluations in the outpatient clinic in conjunction with the primary hematologist and keeping detailed medical records.
• Collaborating with the inpatient team regarding the management and follow-up of patients with sickle cell disease.
• Conducting patient evaluations in the research setting and keeping detailed research-related records
• Serving as liaison to referring physicians.
• Maintaining telephone contact as necessary with patients and referring physicians between visits
• Educating patients, families, health care professionals and the general public about all aspects of sickle cell disease.
• Providing consultation related to symptom management/supportive care.
• Contribute to the academic and research activities of the UNC Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology and the UNC School of Nursing.

Educational Requirements

Applicants must have completed a four-year undergraduate degree and Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician’s Assistant (PA) program. Physician Assistant – requires graduation from a Physician Assistant program approved by the NC Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the NC Board of Medical Examiners, Nurse Practitioner – licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Board of Nursing and graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the NC Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Joint Subcommittee.

Qualifications and Experience

The Physician Assistant applicant preferably will have experience as an extender for at least one year; Nurse Practitioner will have experience as a nurse practitioner for at least one year; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
