PlayMakers Repertory Company is the award-winning, professional theatre in residence at UNC-Chapel Hill and has been honored as one of the best regional theatres in the country. It produces 10 shows each season along with extensive community engagement and K-12 education programs.

Position Description

The purpose of the Associate Director of Development (ADD) position is to lead the comprehensive strategy and execution of the Annual Fund program at PlayMakers Repertory Company. This includes planning, developing and managing external communications with the audience, donors and potential donors for PlayMakers and planning, developing and managing special events. The goal is a 10% annual increase in the annual fund for each of the next five years, after which a new goal will be set. Out of a $3 million operating budget, the contributed income goal is $1 million, out of which $600,000 is from the annual fund. The ADD will write and edit materials in a variety of mediums including mail, email, and websites. S/he will serve as the liaison to the PlayMakers Advisory Council and Gala Committee. The Associate Director will also oversee and manage the use of PlayMakers database (Tessitura) for fundraising needs and UNC’s Blackbaud (Davie) donor database. S/he will research and maintain current knowledge in fundraising techniques to apply at PlayMakers. S/he will work closely with the marketing, box office, artistic, education and production departments at PlayMakers to craft effective external communications and execute the annual fund program in concert with other external relations and sales efforts at PlayMakers. Occasional evening and weekends are also required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, research and wealth screening tools is required, as is demonstrable experience in planning fundraising events and other complex events. Experience in multi-faceted Annual Fund tactics is also essential, as are excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills. Experience in multi-tasking and achieving goals in a collaborative, dynamic work environment is required. The selected candidate must exhibit the highest standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by integrity, initiative, collaborative teamwork, critical thinking, accuracy, and attention to detail. The ability to engage professionally and effectively with a variety of constituents including patrons, donors, alumni, faculty, administrators and corporate partners is also required.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of demonstrable experience in planning fundraising events and other complex events is preferred. Experience in managing staff and working with volunteer leadership committees is also highly preferable, as is experience in Tessitura, email (such as Constant Contact) and design software (InDesign or Photoshop). A successful track record in fundraising in the arts, especially the theater or higher education, is also preferred.
