Position Summary

The Sumner Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Nutrition Research Institute is seeking individuals who have graduate experience in mass spectrometry to join our team and conduct metabolomics analysis. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work as an integral part of the Sumner Lab to conduct metabolomics investigations in nutrition, environmental exposures, and metabolic variation. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will acquire, analyze, and interpret findings using mass spectrometry, software for statistical and multivariate analysis, and pathway mapping. Additionally, the Postdoctoral Research Associate may participate in establishing and applying new methods in metabolomics data capture and analysis. Selected responsibilities include data acquisition and analysis, quality control reviews, participation in meetings, presentations, and proposal and manuscript development. This position is located in Kannapolis, NC (near Charlotte, approximately 2 hours from the UNC-Chapel Hill main campus).

DUTIES:
70% – Mass Spectrometry Metabolomics Research
• Conduct mass spectrometry metabolomics analysis
• Participate in proposal and manuscript development
• Maintain positive working relationships with collaborators

20% – Data Analysis Research
• Monitor quality control of metabolomics data analysis
• Collaborate with biostatisticians to analyze metabolomics data

10% – General Lab
• Receive samples
• Log in inventory
• Provide general laboratory cleanup
• Order supplies
• Schedule studies

Educational Requirements

PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, or other relevant field, with experience in mass spectrometry methods for the analysis of metabolites in biological samples.

Qualifications and Experience

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum of two years of experience in graduate school for the acquisition and analysis of liquid chromatography mass spectrometry data with knowledge of quality control procedures
• Experience in sample extraction and preparation from biospecimens, including humans, animals, and cell cultures, as well as experience in handling, storage, and disposal of biospecimens
• Experience in mass spectrometry, including experience in metabolomics
• A good understanding of the quality control procedures used in mass spectrometry
• Team-oriented mindset with strong critical thinking skills, self-direction, and motivation
• Demonstrated project management skills
• Effective time management and organizational skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills for communicating scientific results
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment
• Computer skills: Experience working with Waters, Thermo, and/or LECO software for mass spectrometry

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with metabolomics studies using ThermoFisher Scientific (Orbi-Trap) and/or Waters (Synapt GS2) LC-MS platforms, and identification of environmentally relevant compounds
• Knowledge and experience in metabolomics data analysis, e.g., statistical and multivariate data analysis and pathway analysis
