Position Summary Information

Department Description

Campus Maintenance delivers a high level of maintenance and repairs for the majority of the buildings on campus, as well as some satellite locations off campus. This maintenance unit services the entire building envelope, and supporting systems, as well as provides minor renovations and construction projects through the expertise of the technical trade groups. The buildings aesthetics and its usability, both interior and exterior, must continually provide an environment that is conducive to higher education needs and expectations. A specialized maintenance group is specifically assigned to the Dean E. Smith Center and is responsible for the Dean E. Smith Center, the Koury Natatorium, and the Ernie Williamson Athletic Center which houses the offices of Carolina Athletics, the Educational Foundation, and the Carolina Men’s Basketball Offices and arena.

Position Description

This position is required to perform general tasks and duties associated with the electrical trade to include troubleshooting and repair of lighting systems and associated components, building electrical systems at the 120/208 volt and 277/480 volt range.

This position provides focused support for Bio-safety Level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs. This requires a baseline blood draw, a physical, and inoculations. Entry into hot labs with Environment, Health & Safety escort will be required, which requires wearing respiratory protection as well as annual medical certification, fit testing, and training. Other general safety and technical training will be provided. Candidates must have the knowledge, skills, and ability to provide oversight to other trades supporting these labs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have the ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical switch gear and distribution panels. Must possess the skills and knowledge to properly and safely use and operate the associated powered or hand tools of the trade, general maintenance, repair, replacement, fabrication, installation, alteration, the ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and detailed job descriptions, ability to create a materials take-off list and complete purchase requisitions for needed materials, the ability to complete purchase requisitions for other purchases (i.e., tools and tool accessories as necessary), and the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication and adherence to safety. Knowledge and understanding of the National Electrical Code and NFPE 70E needed. Must be able to read and interpret complex electrical schematics and prints.

Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years demonstrated journey level experience in electrical maintenance or construction.

Required Licenses/Certifications

Valid N.C. Drivers License or the ability to obtain one.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

Must be able to work on hands and knees for extended periods of time; Ability to move objects in excess of 50 lbs.; climb and work from high ladders, boom lifts and scaffolding up to 60 ft. , must be able to wear required PPE for the specific job, including but not limited to: safety harnesses, fall protection, respirators, face masks or face shields, and protective gloves and safety shoes.
